Your body will take some time to restart production of testosterone naturally. Low testosterone (male hypogonadism) is a condition in which your testicles don’t produce enough testosterone. It has several possible causes, including conditions or injuries affecting your testicles, pituitary gland or hypothalamus. The blood tests measure total serum testosterone, complete blood count (hematocrit), and prostate-specific antigens (PSA). People can expect to have these blood tests at the start of the treatment, then three to six months later. Doctors will then repeat these tests annually if the results prove to be stable. Past research found a correlation between TRT and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to testosterone’s growth-promoting effects on the prostate. This is common among aging men who developed hypogonadism late in their life.

While low testosterone (also known as hypogonadism) can certainly be responsible for low energy and a depressed mood, it isn’t the only cause. In fact, approximately 60 percent of men diagnosed with low testosterone will also have diabetes or metabolic syndrome. Low testosterone may also be related to cancer, brain-related diseases, obstructive sleep apnea and other hormonal abnormalities. That is why proper evaluation by a licensed physician, including screenings for pituitary tumors, prostate cancer and other coexisting conditions, is very important. Historically, the concern for TRT was its effect on the prostate. Despite evidence that the prostate does enlarge slightly on TRT, no studies have shown any significant worsening of urinary symptoms while on therapy.

The RCTs of the effects of testosterone on cognitive function are limited and equivocal. Some studies reported improvements in verbal memory and visuospatial skill while others found no effect. In general, testosterone treatment of older hypogonadal men without cognitive deficit has not improved cognitive function (22, 23). In young hypogonadal men, testosterone treatment improves areal as well as volumetric BMD, trabecular architecture, and estimated bone strength. In the TTrials, testosterone treatment of older hypogonadal men increased volumetric BMD and estimated bone strength in the hip and spine more than placebo (21). None of the testosterone trials has been sufficiently long or large to determine its effect on fracture risk. Testosterone might also reduce fall propensity because of its effects on muscle strength and reaction time.

Levothyroxine plays an essential role in plans designed to treat hypothyroidism symptoms, as well as improve metabolism, mood, and general hormone levels. By boosting your body’s production of testosterone, clomiphene citrate (generic Clomid®) increases energy and improves mood and focus while preserving fertility. When undergoing Testosterone therapy, we will carefully monitor your progress along with your blood levels. This will require monthly visits initially which will be stretched to every three months once we are satisfied with our dose protocol. These visits are essential for us to identify and address any side effects.

For patients who have an elevated PSA at baseline, a second PSA test is recommended to rule out a spurious elevation. Many men have lowered testosterone levels as they age, and these low levels can start to cause a variety of symptoms. Male hormone replacement therapy, or TRT therapy, is a safe and effective treatment option if you have symptoms or difficulty with low testosterone levels.
